12 Indoor Things to do in Breckenridge

As winter rolls around, you may be looking for some more warm activities as you travel the Colorado mountains. While it’s fun to spend a day skiing, you can stay warm afterward with these indoor things to do in Breckenridge, CO with kids.

If the family is worn out from skiing or you’re just not a skiing family in general, then this list is for you. The mountains of Colorado are beautiful in winter. While there are plenty out outdoor activities, you may want some indoor activities in Breckenridge whether you are trying to stay out of the cold in winter, take a break from the sun in summer, or avoid a rainy day.

We typically enjoy the outdoors, but have done a few of these indoor activities as well. Breckenridge has a lot to offer, so get ready to fill your visit with family fun.

So here is my list a the best indoor attractions in Breckenridge so you can make that family vacation incredible, rain, snow, or shine!

1. Breckenridge Rec Center

880 Airport Rd

The Breckenridge Rec Center is full of fun. With 88,000 square feet of space, it offers plenty of variety for the whole family to be entertained for the day. A few of the fun offerings include:

Swimming Pool

No matter what time of year it is, my kids always love to go swimming.

The Breckenridge Rec Center is perfect for families with kids who feel the same.

Purchase a day pass to the rec center and let the kids use up their energy swimming and splashing the day away. There are even waterslides to keep them happy, (because usually that’s all it takes for my kids to stay happy).

The swimming area features:

  • Leisure pool
  • lap lanes
  • play structure
  • waterslides
  • lazy river

and more!

Climbing Area

The rec center offers plenty of climbing programs and classes, all within its indoor climbing area.

The 1,400 square foot area is filled with 10 climbing routes, top ropes, belays, and more features to give you a great experience.

2. Family Turf Time and Bounce House

189 Boreas Pass Rd

Seasonal in the summer months. Check ahead!

This is an activity especially fun for toddlers in Breckenridge.

For littles wanting to get some wiggles out, head to the Stephen C West Ice arena. You’ll actually find a large turf field inside the building.

Kids are welcome to kick around the balls or just run around. There is also a large inflatable on the turf, giving them some great gross motor skills.

3. Ready Paint Fire

112 South Ridge Street

Have you ever tried going to an established art place to learn some more artistic skills? It’s amazing what you can accomplish with a little professional guidance.

Ready Paint Fire in Breckenridge takes “sip-n-paint” experiences to a whole other level.

Yes, you can choose to do an amazing canvas painting.

But the art studio also offers unique art experiences like candle making, mosaics, glass fusing, and pottery painting.

The only place we’ve seen mosaic options was at our visit to YMCA in Estes Park, which was a huge art studio.

These unique art experiences will be really fun for the kids to try out, all while giving your family a space to connect and create.

4. Mountain Time Escape

3 locations downtown Breck

Does your family like a challenge? Take a fun approach to solving this challenge in an escape room in on of the best indoor activities in Breckenridge.

Mountain Time Escape has 3 locations, dependent on which escape room you’d like to participate in. They are all within a 5 minute walk from each other.

Every room can hold a family, with the highest occupancy ranging from 6-12 people. All ages are welcome to participate, making it great for families in any stage.

Will you search for Bigfoot, try to escape while in the avalanche survival cabin, or go on a magical quest?

The rooms are well designed with special effects and/or animatronics to enhance the experience.

Whichever escape you choose to conquer, you’ll have a blast at this indoor Breckenridge activity.

5. Country Boy Mine

0542 French Gulch Rd

The Country Boy Mine is the only underground mine in Breckenridge. So while you could still argue that it’s outside, it’s enough protection from the elements to make the indoor things to do in Breckenridge list.

Plus, it’s one of the more unique things to do, helping it earn its spot.

At Country Boy Mine, visitors venture 1,000 feet into the mountain as they take a tour of this historic place. Take a tour inside, check out the exhibits and old photos from over 100 years ago.

Dress warm as it gets chilly year round! It’s a nice reprieve from the sun on hot summer days in Breck.

6. Eclipse Theater

103 S Harris Street

The Eclipse Theater was opened in 2021 and is home to the Breck Film Festival. Festival is put on by Breck Film, a non profit dedicated to education and entertainment through films. Each year, movie-goers can participate in seeing shorts, indie films, and more.

The festival makes its way in around the end of September each year.

But during the rest of the year, when the festival isn’t around, visitors can still catch a current flick at this entertainment staple.

It’s located conveniently just a short walk from Main Street.

7. Mountain Top Explorium Children’s Museum

100 S Park Ave, C100

Who would have thought you’d find a children’s museum in the middle of an adventurous mountain town? You’ll be lucky to find one in Breck!

At this children’s museum in Breckenridge, kids are welcome to create, discover light, make believe in a medical world, explore through the STEM area, and more. Toddler areas are perfect for younger ones working on colors, fine, and gross motor skills.

This children’s museum is filled with hands-on fun for all ages.

To access the museum, park at the (paid) Icehouse lot (not to be confused with the ice rink). At the south side of the lot is a bridge to cross the river, where you’ll find the museum.

8. Downstairs at Eric’s

111 S Main Street

Downstairs at Eric’s is a classic spot to visit while in Breckenridge. (Check out my Breckenridge family scavenger hunt, where this iconic place is included!)

My kids loved getting to order food, play, eat, and play some more! This place has classic arcade games to entertain the whole family.

First, enjoy some traditional pizza, burgers, salads and more.

Then head to the cool arcade filled with games and Skee-ball (a family favorite) to entertain both kids and adults during your visit. It’s a great way to take a long, lazy lunch and spend some fun quality time with this rainy day activity in Breckenridge.

9. Stephen C West Ice Arena

189 Boreas Pass Road

Keep that Colorado winter vacation feeling without having to freeze!

Any family that enjoys being on the ice will love the Stephen C West Ice Arena. Located on the south side of town (right near the easy hike to the troll), the ice rink has plenty of events and activities for families.

While the arena schedules times for various leagues, they also offer public skate often. In addition to open skate, you may be lucky enough to visit during a themed skate night!

The rink offers disco skate nights on the weekend. If your family is into hockey, they also have family hockey drop in on the schedule.

Make sure to check the schedule ahead of time to see when open skate or drop in times are during your visit.

Indoor Things to do Near Breckenridge

These next few things aren’t within the proper limits of Breckenridge, but they are just a short drive away. Here are a few more indoor activities when you visit Breckenridge.

10. Elevation Bowl (in Dillon)

135 Main St, Dillon

Bowling is always a fun cold-day or rainy-day activity. If you drive over to Dillon, located just on the north side of Dillon Reservoir, you’ll find Elevation Bowling.

This fun family activity is the perfect indoor thing to do near Breckenridge, and as a bonus you’ll get to see another great mountain town that is much less-visited.

This bowling alley is the highest by elevation in the world.

The alley was renovated a few years ago, keeping it one of the cleaner and more up-to-date alleys you’ll visit.

Come hungry, as they also serve up pizza, chicken, and vegetarian options.

11. Frisco Historic Park and Museum (Frisco)

120 East Main Street, Frisco

The town of Frisco is just a short drive away from Breckenridge. They are neighboring towns that even share a free public transportation shuttle.

While the park may be outdoors, the cute little schoolhouse museum in Frisco is a great, free way to spend some time with the family.

Summit county has a deep history, and you can witness it through photos and exhibits, as well as actual buildings themselves in Frisco.

Kids can connect as they see old school desks and what a day was like at school long ago.

12. Glass Blowing (Frisco)

Take the family for a truly unique experience! You don’t have to go to Venice to experience Glass Blowing. You can head to the Gatherhouse in Frisco and try it yourself.

For families with mature kids ages 9 and up, you can book a session to learn how to do glassblowing. John will spend a 3 hour session with your group helping you make a vase, ornament, or other simple, beginner item.

While visiting Breckenridge, there are plenty of great hotels to stay in. In fact, if you want a truly magical, mountain experience, I recommend finding an awesome cabin.

Whether the weather is too hot, too cold, or too rainy for your visit, or if you just need a break and change of scene, there are plenty of things to do indoors in Breckenridge, CO. From museums to glass blowing to a great children’s museum, there is something for the whole family.
